Environment Partnership

The Environment Partnership is committed to improving Walsall’s environment.  We aim to ensure that we pass on to future generations, a thriving community with a green, clean, safe, prosperous and healthy environment.  It will achieve this by bringing together members from the public, private, community and voluntary sector, all of whom have an interest in improving and protecting the environment.

We recognise that the environment is a major factor in determining the quality of life within Walsall. It cannot be treated in isolation as it impacts upon, and in turn is affected by many other equally important social and economic issues. Working as a partnership, with representatives from a variety of sectors, it will help us understand the interplay between these factors in order to develop lasting solutions.

In order to ensure that the Partnership helps to deliver sustainable environmental improvements we have identifed a number of key objectives that we need to achieve:

1. Delivering and monitoring short, medium and long term environmental priorities through the development and implementation of an Environmental Action Plan.

The Partnership has agreed eight priority areas which have formulated the crux of the Environmental Action Plan.  The progress of the action plan is driven through the Strategy group and monitored on a quarterly basis. It aims to improve and protect the different elements of the environment.

2. Developing and delivering partnership working with partner organisations to deliver environmental priorities.

The key aspect of this is to combine the efforts of both Walsall Council and external organisations to make a real difference. This will be developed using the following methods:

  • Developing a network group, known as the Environment Forum, aimed at representatives from the public, private, voluntary and community sector, who have an interest in Walsall’s environment.  The Forum meets quarterly and encourages partners to share their ideas and provide commitment towards achieving the aims of the Partnership.
  • Working with partners to identify opportunities for them to develop and take ownership of the Forum’s priorities.
  • Encouraging a greater sense of understanding and responsibility for the environment within all of Walsall’s communities.
  • Working closely with the LNPs to increase engagement with the community to raise awareness of environmental issues and gain feedback on their concerns.

3. Contributing to WBSP’s effective cross theme working and influencing of activities to gain widespread benefits.

This will ensure that sustainable environmental improvements are made across all service areas, whilst achieving the required balance between economic, social and environmental factors.

  • Give due consideration in all decision-making processes to the environmental impact of new policies and proposals, such as the Black Country  Core Strategy, Designing a Better Walsall, etc.  Expert advice will be provided via the Technical Advisory Group.  Advice will include suggestions, where applicable for revising commissions to ensure outcomes wherever possible contribute towards achieving positive environmental outcomes.
  • Working with other WBSP Theme Groups, to ensure that our actions are delivering the liveability agenda and that resource allocation supports tackling environmental problems.

4. Developing an overarching strategy for sustainability and influencing emerging strategies including the Sustainable Communities Strategy, the Climate Change Strategy and Environmental Action Plan, the Walsall Local Development Framework and the Local Neighbourhood Area Agreement.

  • The development of an overarching strategy for sustainability will allow Walsall MBC to pledge their commitment to sustainability, as well as providing a mechanism to ensure that all service areas adopt sustainable approach to the way they operate.
  • Working closely on the development of a Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan will ensure that a comprehensive overview is given on how Walsall MBC can lead by example.
